New Moon DVD Guide For Dummies

As we all know, the New Moon DVD release date is THIS Saturday (3/20) and - as we all know - there are about 437 different DVD's that will be available come that day. Now, to piggy-back off of what TwilightersAnonymous did, I took their comprehensive DVD Guide and dumbed it down... or tried to at least. I also put my final verdict at the end of this post as to what DVD I'll be purchasing. So, here we go:

The Basic 2-Disc Edition* of the New Moon DVD will include -

  • Commentary with Chris Weitz and Peter Lambert (editor)
  • A six part documentary on the making of New Moon which is an hour long. This includes - “Life After Twilight”; “Chris Weitz takes the helm”; “The Subtle Details”; “Time to Shine”; “Tricks of the Trade”; “Ready for the World”
  • Rehearsal Footage with Muse and music videos with Death Cab for Cutie, Anya Marina, and Mute Math
*Note: No matter what “special edition” or “exclusive” version of the DVD you buy, these things will be included.

Borders - $29.99

Borders will have really pretty packaging, as well as a necklace that you know you will never wear. One side of the necklace has the wolf pack emblem, the other has the Cullen crest. Additionally, their DVD will include: 11 extended scenes (25mins combined), interviews with basically everyone from the film (Rob, Kristen, Taylor, the Cullens, the Wolves, the Volturi) + Chris Weitz, red carpet footage from the premiere in LA and a "front row seat to The Twilight Saga: New Moon Webcast" (whatever that is.)

Target - $19.99

Target will once again have the 3-disc deluxe edition which will have a collectible 5x7 film cell (that you will never actually do anything with) along with it. Their edition also has over 50 minutes of extras including 4 featurettes - "Introducing the Volturi", "From Storyboard to Screen", "Fandamonium: A Look at the Die Hard Fans" & "The Beat Goes On: The Music of New Moon" - as well as deleted scenes. No word on what those deleted scenes are, how long they are OR how many there are.

Walmart - $24.96

Walmart is going to have the DVD everyone is going to want and buy (most likely). Along with their pretty Lenticular packaging, they are the one's that will have the Eclipse sneak-peek. Included on their special edition will be "new interviews" with Rob, Kristen, Taylor & Stephanie Meyer conducted on specific sets from Eclipse. At the end of that 7 minutes, there is a scene from the movie that includes Bella & Edward "that will have Twilight fans swooning." I can only imagine it's the controversial leghitch scene for which we've already seen the leaked images.

Barnes & Noble - $23.09

The Barnes & Noble DVD has no special features. It is the basic 2-disc edition of the DVD (see beginning of post for features) but comes with a dreamcatcher bag clip that’s pretty cute… if you’re Team Jacob. ;)

Best Buy - $24.99

Best Buy also is also selling just the basic 2-disc edition DVD but their packaging is different. The case it comes in is metal so you can use it for storage on a dresser or closet, or you can just put your NM DVD binder back in it and keep it on the DVD rack. They are also including an offer for a “free cell phone skin.” To actually RECEIVE the cell phone skin, you must pre-order through Best Buy’s website and they send it to you along with the DVD. No word on what the skin looks like or what type of cell phones it will fit.

Amazon - $20.49

FINALLY, Amazon is selling the basic 2-disc edition with no extra frills, bells or whistles. This DVD includes everything that is listed at the very top of the post.

My final verdict:

I’ll be buying from 2 different places, as I did with Twilight. I bought Twilight from Borders last year just because I love their packaging. Also, what’s drawing me in with Borders is the 11 extended scenes… that’s a lot of scenes! I’ll also be getting the Target 3-disc edition because it has the deleted scenes and the extra hour of featurettes. I really want to get the Walmart DVD because of the Eclipse sneak-peek, but I know the clips and interviews will end up on YouTube by the end of the week, so I won’t waste my money. ;)

  1. Any idea if the Walmart dvd is for North America or just USA? I live in Canada and so we have all of our own deals and what not but I have yet to hear anything about all the special bells and whistles that the Walmart one has! I'd most likely pick that one up for sure! :)

  3. I pre-ordered the Target one, for $26.99. just got an email from them today that if it sells for less at release, I will be charged the lower amount. Considering I'm looking at $31.48 with tax & S/h, I'm considering canceling my pre-order & just buying the same thing at Target on the release date for $19.99.
I did the same thing for twilight, only I waited for my pre-ordered one to arrive & just returned it. It came 4 days after the release. >:(
I figure any 'extra' deleted/extended scenes on the other versions will end up on YT.

  4. I've been hoping someone would post a comprehensible guide to this, since there are so many options and my budget is so very limited. I look forward to learning how many scenes the Target set has, but in general your conclusion seems spot-on. Thank you for this!!!
